How Somni.fit estimates mattress characteristics
What our support, pressure-relief and temperature estimates mean, how the construction rules work, and what the evidence cannot tell you.
Three different things, kept separate
Somni.fit estimated ratings describe a mattress. Evidence confidence describes the information supporting each rating. Your personal fit score compares those characteristics with your quiz profile; it is not a percentage chance of satisfaction. A higher coordinate is not a better mattress for everyone.
Our initial method is a provisional, versioned rule-based heuristic, not independent laboratory testing, scientific validation or a medical assessment. An estimate label alone does not establish a reasonable basis for an advertising claim. Public product numbers and recommendations remain withheld until an exact-product, dated substantiation review covers the method, evidence, intended claim and limits. Review is separate from the internal construction calculation; it is not a legal certification or a guarantee of performance.
The scales and the grid
The proposed characteristic scales run from 0 to 5, rounded to half points. Internally the same values use 0 to 4 units: multiply by 1.25 for display, or by 0.8 for storage. The existing grid has support increasing to the left and pressure relief increasing upward. Its colors, curves and numbered axes are unchanged. Only the shared rendering helper translates mathematical coordinates to screen pixels.
Support means predicted resistance to excessive sinking. Pressure relief means potential to accommodate contours and distribute load, not measured pressure reduction. Temperature means estimated heat-management potential, with higher numbers indicating more of that potential. Firmness remains a separate surface-feel characteristic. A difference smaller than a displayed half point is treated as a tie in the characteristic estimate. Unknown is not zero.
Exactly which mattress, and which evidence?
We keep the exact brand, model, firmness, retailer variation and available generation, SKU, GTIN and size information. An unspecified generation stays unknown; construction is not borrowed from a similarly named bed. Size-dependent specifications need size-specific evidence. Each fact retains its source, publisher, retrieval date, supporting text or document location, applicability, evidence kind and conflicts.
Ordered layers preserve materials, documented thickness, density, compression, coil specifications, zoning, cover and thermal mechanisms when supplied. Unlisted features are unknown, not absent. Density is never inferred from total mattress weight. Copied descriptions and synonymous facts do not create additional scoring benefits or independent sources. Manufacturer specifications establish what was reported; they do not prove independently verified performance.
Support: the whole stack, not a coil-count contest
Version somni-construction-1 requires a documented core, known comfort-layer materials and thicknesses, confirmed top-to-bottom order and an exact firmness option before placing a product on the grid. Essential conflicts withhold the estimate.
The provisional support rule starts at 2.5. Listed firmness contributes between −0.5 and +0.5. Documented comfort depth above 4.5 inches contributes −0.5; depth of 2 inches or less contributes +0.25. Documented zoning contributes +0.25. The result is bounded to 0–5 and rounded to a half point. These choices describe a broad predicted sinking-resistance characteristic; their weights require validation.
Coils, mattress height, higher price and firmer advertising do not automatically mean strong support. Without compression specifications or applicable resistance testing, confidence remains limited. This is not a load limit, a durability score or proof of spinal alignment.
Pressure relief: material, depth and order
The initial pressure-relief rule uses the same whole-construction minimum. It starts at 1.5 and considers documented comfort material and depth. Memory foam contributes 0.30 per inch up to 1.5; flexible grid contributes 0.40 per inch up to 1.2; other known comfort materials contribute 0.15 per inch up to 0.75. Layers below the first comfort layer receive 65% of their contribution. Quilting contributes 0.10 per inch, capped at 0.25. Firmness changes this by at most 0.25. The bounded result is rounded to a half point.
These are transparent, provisional construction rules, not measured material coefficients. Trade names with undocumented composition stay unknown. Softness by itself does not establish useful pressure distribution. Your shape, position, the underlying support and actual settling experience still matter.
Temperature: first touch is not the whole night
Internally we assess initial cool feel, sustained heat handling and moisture management separately. A combined temperature number can be considered for publication only when all three have enough information and the numerical claim basis has passed separate review. Missing components are never dropped so that the favorable disclosed features dominate an average.
The provisional combination gives 25% to initial feel, 60% to sustained heat handling and 15% to moisture management. This is a product-design emphasis on the overnight experience, not a scientifically validated weighting. A documented surface phase-change mechanism starts at 3 for initial feel; another explicit cool-touch or conductive-surface mechanism starts at 2.5. Explicitly documented absence of a mechanism is 1.5; an undocumented mechanism is unknown.
Sustained heat handling requires the documented full comfort stack, cover permeability and an upper-layer ventilation path. Its initial construction estimate is 3, reduced by 0.5 when documented memory-foam comfort depth exceeds 3 inches. An exact powered-air system starts at 4 only when the rest of these requirements are met. Moisture management is 2.5 for an explicitly documented wicking or sorptive mechanism, 1.5 for documented absence, and otherwise unknown. Every number is rounded to a half point.
Gel, copper, graphite, premium, cooling or breathable wording alone adds no points. A hybrid category adds no automatic cooling benefit. Powered control is identified separately and depends on a compatible powered base, mode, room conditions and bedding. None of these estimates states degrees cooler or guaranteed cooling hours.
Claims, unknowns and confidence
Comparative claims such as percentages, multiples or degrees are stored separately with their comparator, test duration, method and conditions where provided. They never become universal Somni points. Incompatible brand tests are not a common ranking scale. Unresolved conflicts in essential specifications withhold the affected estimate.
Insufficient information means an essential input is missing. Limited confidence means an estimate has a construction basis but important specificity, testing or independent corroboration is absent. Moderate confidence requires complete relevant information and at least two independent original publishers. Higher confidence additionally requires applicable independent measured evidence. Sources older than two years cannot qualify for those higher labels. These states describe evidence quality, not statistical accuracy.
Marketing volume cannot increase confidence. Source retrieval dates are retained; an older or temporarily unavailable source does not become a fresh test. A failed refresh retains the last accepted evidence and assessment rather than replacing it with an empty scrape.
Personal matching and honest gaps
Your quiz estimates a region of support and pressure-relief needs. We preserve that region and the separate needs of both sleepers. Compatibility uses 75% coordinate proximity and 25% known stated preferences; the shared score for two sleepers uses the lower individual result. Unknown temperature is not scored as warm and is disclosed as missing evidence. Recommendations require a fit score of at least 75 and must lie within one displayed FitGrid point of every sleeper, measured as a circular radius of two half-point grid cells. The API and results page share this rule. A temperature estimate cannot override that support and pressure-relief neighborhood requirement.
A bed without sufficient support or relief evidence or a current numerical-claim review stays browsable as factual model notes, without a precise chart position or personal ranking. We do not move beds to fill every intersection, raise numbers to reach a target fit score or treat a model name as proof of store-floor availability. Prices, delivery and showroom status need their own current evidence.
How we check the mattress matching software
Our October 21, 2026 regression audit checked 16,384 distinct fictional sleeper profiles, 2,048 couple pairings and 1,728 complete results journeys across six mattress sizes and six budget ceilings. The same matching version used by the audit is somni-pilot-7-construction-estimates. These figures count test cases, not real customers, preset sleeper types or measured sleep outcomes.
The checks cover bounded FitGrid estimates, self-reported shoulder and hip proportions, discomfort context, temperature and movement preferences, incomplete information, separate needs for couples, unchanged scores and budgets, and four visible technology collections. Comparisons retain their original scores and labels. Missing product evidence remains unscored.
This is finite synthetic software testing against a captured catalog. It does not establish clinical accuracy, a satisfaction probability, live stock, delivery coverage or a qualifying match for every sleeper. Our mission is to improve with stronger product evidence and voluntary real-world feedback; changes require review rather than automatic learning from a small sample.
Updates, corrections and real outcomes
Retailers can submit sourced construction corrections and compare a preview with the active assessment. Only Somni platform catalog review can activate a shared assessment; suppliers cannot edit or purchase higher ratings. Assessment history retains prior versions and supports restoring prior accepted evidence. Price and commission changes do not reassess construction; relevant specification or model changes do.
Voluntary feedback can distinguish pressure location, excessive sinking, contouring, first-touch versus overnight heat, moisture, satisfaction, returns and exchanges. Purchase-linked store records are distinguished from unverified reports. Personal information remains in protected feedback and profile flows, not the public catalog. No small sample automatically changes weights; previous predictions are never treated as observed outcomes.
Actual sleep varies with the person, sheets, protector, foundation, room and time. Try the exact version and confirm the seller’s policies. Commercial compensation, retailer participation and sponsorship do not determine characteristic ratings or product recommendation order. Default mattress order follows exact personal fit; store display only breaks equal-score ties. Public reader experiences stay separate from FitGrid ratings. See /our-promise for the complete rules.
Nearby beds and a fair shared-bed trial order
Product cards distinguish closest-to-plot positions (within 0.25 displayed grid unit), a small range (0.5), and the full recommendation range (1.0). For couples the farthest individual distance determines the band. These are transparent interface thresholds, not validated clinical tolerances. Every recommendation still requires at least 75/100 and must sit inside each sleeper’s range.
Choosing Explore wider can show in-budget comparisons within 1.5 displayed grid units of each sleeper, still with at least 75/100. Options outside the main fitting range remain comparisons, not new recommendations. Broadening the view does not change a score, product evidence or price, and does not guarantee that a product exists in every range.
When both sleepers explicitly answered the same pressure-frequency question and their answers differ, equal shared fit scores are ordered by the better individual score for the person reporting pressure more often. Both scores remain visible. Frequency is not pain severity; unknown or declined answers create no priority. Discomfort does not earn bonus fit points or override either sleeper’s range. If no shared range exists, ask the retailer about a suitable split setup rather than treating an average point as a match.
