MATTRESS FIELD GUIDE

Mattress construction, without the guesswork

Compare memory foam, hybrid, innerspring and specialty mattresses using practical questions about support, pressure relief, movement and temperature.

Start with the layers, then try the feel

A construction label describes what is inside a mattress. It does not set a universal comfort level or a verified fit score. Somni keeps construction separate from your support and pressure-relief needs so that different technologies can remain on your shortlist.

Use the comparisons below to plan an in-store test. Exact foam, coil, cover and comfort-layer specifications matter more than a category name alone.

Memory foam: explore contouring and movement

Memory-foam models use foam comfort layers over a support system; a non-hybrid model has no coil support unit. Ask which exact version is being shown, since the same family may offer a hybrid option.

During your test, notice how easily you can turn, how the surface feels after you settle, and whether your shoulder and hip feel cushioned in your normal position. A material name cannot establish a personal pressure-relief result.

Hybrid: identify the comfort layer and the coils

A hybrid combines a coil support system with substantial comfort layers, which may include memory foam, other foams, latex or a specialty material. Two hybrids can feel very different.

Ask how the comfort versions differ and test the edge, turning over and both partners moving. Coils alone do not establish strong support for every body type, and a thicker comfort layer is not automatically better pressure relief.

Innerspring and specialty: ask what the label leaves out

Innerspring mattresses also combine springs with upholstery or cushioning. The distinction from a hybrid is not a consistent performance threshold across brands, so compare the actual layer descriptions.

Specialty is a broad Somni browsing category, not one material. Identify whether a model uses latex, a flexible grid or another construction before comparing it. Ask about base compatibility, permitted loads and the exact comfort version rather than assuming all specialty beds behave alike.

Cooling claims need context

Separate a cool-to-the-touch surface claim from measured overnight temperature performance. Bedding, protectors, room conditions and the sleeper also affect the experience. Somni does not translate a marketing temperature claim into a calibrated cooling score.

Keep cooling, movement, edge comfort and support as separate observations during a test. This gives you a more useful comparison than a single “best mattress” label.
